Materials Testing & Characterization

Kratos’ mechanical testing laboratory features more than 40 fully instrumented test stands, many uniquely developed by Kratos. These machines, driven mechanically or by servo-hydraulics, are calibrated to ASTM E4-89 standards. We use advanced instrumentation, including strain gages, extensometers, optical strain analyzers, modal acoustic emission sensors, and digital image correlation for strain field visualization. Our testing capabilities range from small filament specimens to structural components more than six feet in length.

Chemistry & Physics of Materials

Kratos has developed unique and diverse testing capabilities and facilities to address specific challenges in the application of structural, insulative, and ablative materials across various industries. Our multi-axial stress/strain facility enables precise analysis of material behavior under complex loading conditions. Additionally, our dielectric characterization facility provides in-depth evaluations of material electrical properties. Kratos delivers detailed assessments to support the optimal performance of materials across various applications.

Thermal Testing of Materials

For more than six decades, Kratos has been a national leader in thermal properties characterization and evaluation of high-temperature materials for aerospace, manufacturing, and government clients. Our skilled professionals have tested a variety of materials, including composites, ceramics, metals, insulations, and lubricants in both normal and extreme environments. We test at temperatures ranging from cryogenic to more than 3000°C, ensuring comprehensive assessments for diverse applications.

Capabilities

Kratos’ capabilities include precise thermal expansion and thermal conductivity measurements, along with comprehensive heat capacity evaluations. We offer additional thermal testing, including unique evaluations for phenolic and ablative materials. Our expertise extends to electrical resistivity assessments and material conditioning to ensure materials perform optimally under various conditions.

Kratos’ non-destructive evaluation (NDE) group excels in materials characterization and precision testing of materials and structures.
